A Young Man’s Journey Towards Stability and Employability
8 February 2025
This case study explores the mentoring journey of YP6, a 20-year-old referred to Wipers Youth by the Probation Service while serving a court order for robbery.
YP6, a 20-year-old male, was referred to Wipers Youth by the Probation Service while completing a 3-year court order for robbery. The referral raised concerns about his lack of structure and direction, and the potential impact on his rehabilitation. Additionally, safety concerns arose from YP6’s gang affiliations, which restricted his ability to travel freely across London.
The mentoring programme aimed to help YP6 explore career opportunities, improve employability, and address challenges linked to his gang associations. It also aimed to explore his living situation, as he had been asked to leave the family home. Strengthening his engagement with positive activities and support networks would be important to his rehabilitation.
At the start:
During the initial session at the probation office, YP6 appeared reserved and hesitant but cooperative. As a NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) young adult without qualifications, he was uncertain about his future and financially dependent on his older brother. He shared feelings of unease following a recent altercation but showed enthusiasm for the Wipers Driving Theory Course, indicating a willingness to engage.
Work completed:
The mentor and YP6 agreed to focus on employment goals through taster days in rigging, construction, and music. They also created a safety plan to identify safe travel zones. During the third session, conducted by phone, they completed the Justice Star Questionnaire (JSQ). YP6’s scores indicated strong family ties and emotional regulation but highlighted areas needing improvement, including accommodation, constructive activities, and independent living skills.
Achievements & Challenges:
Key development areas included broadening YP6’s geographical comfort zone, improving employability through practical skills, and addressing cannabis use. A priority was obtaining driving qualifications and securing housing support. A specialist driving course was identified, however, YP6 expressed safety concerns due to the location.
Over time, YP6 showed interest in fitness-related careers, particularly personal training. The mentor identified suitable courses with organisations experienced in supporting ex-offenders, including Plias Resettlement and Bello Fitness. Despite some progress, YP6’s mentoring journey faced challenges. Missed appointments occurred due to minor health issues, family responsibilities, and occasional lack of motivation.
His geographical restrictions further limited access to opportunities. The mentor adapted by offering phone sessions, collaborating with YP6’s probation officer, and exploring fitness training opportunities within safe locations. Regular contact was maintained through reminders and updates.
Areas of Strengths and Development:
The mentor’s understanding of gang dynamics and area restrictions depeened through this case. It also highlighted the need for greater inter-agency collaboration. YP6’s JSQ scores showed improvement in living skills and accommodation, reflecting increased responsibility and self-care. He became more focused on fitness goals and open about challenges, including cannabis use and local conflicts.
However, significant concerns remained. YP6 continued to rely financially on his brother, with unexplained income sources raising questions. Final JSQ scores showed declines in areas such as friends and community, managing emotions, and a crime-free life, indicating increased vulnerability and risk of reoffending.
The mentor highlighted the benefit of ongoing support, including housing assistance, substance use interventions, and tailored fitness training to provide structure and skill development. While YP6 made some progress, comprehensive, long-term support was seen as crucial to address his risk factors and support a pro-social future.
